77 Shadow Street

77 Shadow Street77 Shadow Street by Dean Koontz

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As usual with Koontz, I loved this one. This was a multi-layered story that grows and morphs like the fungus that plagued the Pendleton. Its starts out as a creepy haunted house story. We meet the current residents of this up scale apartment complex and start hearing about the violent past of the building. But as the story continues we find this isn't quite the case.

The story is told from several points of view as it switches between the residents of the Pendleton. I love the way we see the different horrors they encounter. Things that are only the stuff of nightmares but aren't the demons we perceive them to be. The mystery of what is happening at the Pendleton unfolds in pieces along the way and we gradually learn the truth of this nightmare. And we find that what humanity is capable of can be so much terrible than any nightmare.

While its true, as some other reviewers have mentioned, that there are passages that were overly explained. Some had so much detail that I did skim thru it, however, I didn't feel like it detracted from the story. I loved the way it was woven together as past, present, and future intertwined to build a story that you don't expect. If you enjoy a story that covers several genre including sci fic, apocolyptic and horror than you should give this one a try.
