DESCRIPTION:

Normal people sneak out to a party and have fun. Maya Rao ends the evening by incinerating the guy who attacks her.

Nik Lucas, sexy, new in town and totally forbidden, happens to walk in on her. Normal guys would run for the hills. Nik knows a whole lot more than he's telling.

Maya doesn't believe the gods are real, doesn't waste her time with mere mythology. But when gods, demons and hellhound's become the new normal and wielding fire becomes her new skill, she must decide what it is she really believes.

Can Maya accept that normal is something she will never be because it isn't normal to be ...the Hand of Kali.

EXCERPT:

Fear spun Maya around on stricken feet. To defend her back perhaps. She just felt less vulnerable facing her attacker, where she could see his next move. He barreled straight at her. And for all her training in martial arts, she did the one thing her dad always said never to do. She ducked her head and hid her face with her hands. Hands out, as if she could fend off this vicious attacker merely with the soft skin of her palms.

Maya felt the heat before she saw it.

Byron was on fire. A living column of shimmering orange flames. She couldn't breathe. Was afraid to breathe. How did that happen? She glanced around the bathroom as panic filled her veins, her fear taking on a whole new level of hysteria. She had to put the fire out.

She turned to the faucet to fill her hands with water. And froze. In the mirror she saw the burning reflection of Byron disappear. Byron was there one moment and gone the next. Only a few burnt shards of fabric left to say he was ever there. But she remembered the last thing she'd seen before Byron became nothing: brilliant blue eyes turning a frighteningly blood-red.

And Nik, holding the doorknob, staring at the empty space on the floor behind her.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I have been a writer from the time I was old enough to recognise that reading was a doorway into my imagination. Poetry was my first foray into the art of the written word. Books were my best friends, my escape, my haven. I am essentially a recluse but this part of my personality is impossible to practise given I have two teenage daughters, who are actually my friends, my tea-makers, my confidantes… I am blessed with a husband who has left me for golf. It’s a fair trade as I have left him for writing. We are both passionate supporters of each other's loves – it works wonderfully…

My heart is currently broken in two. One half resides in South Africa where my old roots still remain, and my heart still longs for the endless beaches and the smell of moist soil after a summer downpour. My love for Ma Afrika will never fade. The other half of me has been transplanted to the Land of the Long White Cloud. The land of the Taniwha, beautiful Maraes, and volcanoes. The land of green, pure beauty that truly inspires. And because I am so torn between these two lands – I shall forever remain cross-eyed.

Clockwork Princess

Clockwork Princess (The Infernal Devices, #3)Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Out of all the books that I have read by this author this one is by far my favorite. There is so much character development you tend to forget the main plot of the Infernal Devices being the war with Mortmain. But you are never allowed to completely forget, its still there in the background, however the drama with the characters is so good you don't care.

We already knew that Tessa is preparing to wed Jem and she is dealing with her feelings for Will. But now we are facing the reality of Jem's mortality. It is heart wrenching seeing them all have to say good bye along with the guilt that Will and Tessa feel over their feelings for each other.

We also get to know the other characters so much more. The Lightwood brothers as well as Sophie and Will's sister Cecily are much more developed. There are new love interests and we learn just how complicated these characters are. Gideon and Gabriel are so much more than I realized in other books and they are both great characters both similar and different from each other as brothers usually are.

I loved the way all the loose ends were tied up and nearly all the questions explained. We learn more about what Tessa actually is and how she came to be. We learn her true identity and that is certainly a surprise. And I certainly never expected how the love triangle with Her and Jem and Will would be but it was a great ending to a great love story.

Overall, it was a great final book full of love and loss, tears and joy, endings and beginnings. If you enjoyed the other books in the Infernal Devices series you won't want to miss this one. Loved it! Awesome end to a great trilogy.

What do we want? A happy ending! When do we want it? NOW!

Have you ever read a book and thought, sheesh, that’s AWFUL! The poor woman/man/kid/dog!  And then laid awake all night, haunted by the thought of the tragic things that could have been avoided IF ONLY…the author had written in a happy ending.
For instance, Les Miserables, by Victor Hugo, where poor Fantine has to sell her teeth, hair and just about everything else to keep her illegitimate child from the street - and then dies without even SEEING the kid!  Here is how the plot should have gone.  Fantine made some mistakes, went through some rough times.  But then she got married to Jean Valjean, got her kid back, and lived happily ever after.  As for the creepy policeman and the mean foster-mother, they both got their heads chopped off quite early in the piece, and serve them right.
Or Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall series.  Wouldn’t it have been so much nicer (if a bit unhistorical) if Anne Boleyn had said to Henry VIII one day, “You know that thing I said about having to get married before we can have sex?  Well, I’ve changed my mind - I’ll be your mistress, but only if you issue an edict saying no more people are to be tortured or burned at the stake.  What do you say?”
Or… Thomas Hardy (Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure, etc).  Practically anything he wrote could have been improved by the following lines, “So, that’s your dreadful secret.  Fair enough.  Doesn’t sound so bad to me.  Let’s just turn the page and move on, shall we?”.
How about Twilight? I’m treading on thin ice  here, seeing as I haven’t yet read it, but I have seen the movies and I don’t see why it couldn’t have all been sorted out like this.  “I drink blood, you’re hairy.  Takes all sorts.  Anyway, it’s not like Bella’s the only gloomy gothic schoolgirl in town.”
Can anyone think of a better ending for their favourite tragic romances/thrillers etc?  Or - are the tears all part of the fun?

The Last Execution

The Last Execution

By

Jerrie Alexander

Release Date: June 7th, 2013

Blurb:

To survive, she must put the past behind her. To love, she must learn to trust.

Homicide detective Leigh McBride's first assignment with the FBI brings her face-to-face with a past she's tried hard to forget. And when her temporary partner, a cynical ex-marine, lights a fire in her she thought long-extinguished, her darkest secret is threatened.

Scarred both physically and emotionally, Special Agent J. T. Noble is a man of few words. He prefers to keep people at a distance—until he meets Leigh. He's attracted to her strength and drawn in by her secrecy. But in their line of work, secrets can be deadly.

When the killer they are hunting aims his vigilante justice at Leigh's past assailant, the fine line between right and wrong blurs. To heal the past—and find their future together—Leigh and J. T. must learn that only through trust and forgiveness can love grow.

Excerpt:

The six-year-old missile launched himself into the air, giving J.T. two choices. Catch the kid, or let him fall to the ground like a deflated football. J.T. grabbed him and held Ethan out in front, as he would a wet, smelly dog.

Leigh jogged down the sidewalk, sparks flashing from her eyes. She pulled her son out of J.T.’s grasp and plopped the kid down at her feet. She knelt and got right in his face. J.T. made a mental note to not piss her off.

“What have I told you about running out the door?”

Ethan’s head bowed. “Don’t even think about it.” He stared at the tops of his bare feet.

“Obviously, you didn’t listen.” She tugged the knot at the back of her head tighter before she looked up. “Sorry about the attack.”

“Kid’s a natural born high jumper.” J.T. stuffed his hands in his pockets. She’d wadded her hair in the old-lady-school-teacher-bun-thing she wore at work. Probably just as well. If she’d left all that blond silk loose and sexy, he might’ve thought this was a date or something, which it wasn’t. Him being here was entirely the fault of his own big mouth.

“Please.” She waved a hand toward the wide-open front door. “We were about to come and get you.”

                “You knew I was here?”

“A black Corvette rumbling around in our neighborhood doesn’t go unnoticed.”

Dressed in blue jean shorts and a thin-strapped top exactly the same blue as her eyes, Leigh looked more like a model than a mom. J.T. was glad he’d worn a T-shirt and Wranglers.

His chest double-clutched and pulled a weird stutter step when a small hand gripped two of his fingers and two small feet shuffled hurriedly to keep up with him. Tonight was a mistake.

Demon

Demon
By
Laura DeLuca

When Justyn and Rebecca set off for the New York School of Performing Arts, they think their dreams are about to come true. To their dismay, they aren’t in high school anymore, and the competition is steep. Rebecca must compete against accomplished singers for a role in the production of Demon Barber, including a stunning Gothic diva with her sights set on Justyn.
It doesn’t help that things keep disappearing from their apartment or that Rebecca’s father refuses to accept that Justyn is an essential part of her life. Yet, all this seems minimal in comparison to the serial rapist terrorizing the campus.
Consumed by fear and obsessed with revenge, Rebecca and Justyn start living the story of Sweeney Todd—both on and off the stage.

Excerpt:   “What the hell are you looking at?” Livy demanded.
At first Rebecca just ignored her hostility. She walked back to her cubbyhole and opened it to stowaway her bags until practice was over. She was going to forget the whole stupid idea and just walk away. But Livy was still standing there, leaning against the lockers, looking just as sad as she did angry. Rebecca couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. She was reminded of how horribly everyone had treated Justyn during the production of Phantom and thought perhaps Livy was just as misunderstood.
“Livy,” she started, “can we talk for a minute?”
The Goth just gave her a dirty look. “I don’t know what we could possibly have to say to each other.”
“I just wanted to apologize about what happened at the party,” Rebecca spoke with as much sincerity as she could muster. “No matter how we feel about each other, I never meant to … to embarrass you the way I did.”
Rebecca had never seen the cliché of flashing eyes come to life like it did at that moment. “Don’t you dare!” Livy spat. “Don’t you dare pity me!”
“That’s not what I meant,” Rebecca tried to explain, though she knew she was fighting a losing battle. “I just regret—”
“Do you want to know what I regret?” Livy interrupted and actually shoved Rebecca against her locker. “I regret not ripping every strand of hair out of that pretty little head of yours when I had the chance. This isn’t high school, Becca! We aren’t going to be friends. And I’m not going to stop until Justyn is mine and you run back to New Jersey with your tail between your legs. Is that clear enough for you, deary? Don’t try to make nice with me again.”
Livy stomped away, and Rebecca just stood there, feeling shocked and a little stung. She couldn’t believe how vicious Livy could be. So much for olive branches. Instead of trying to hand her one, Rebecca should have shoved it straight up her….
“Wow.” Frankie came up beside her, shaking his head. “It’s girls like that who give PMS a bad rep. I seriously think the next play she should star in is the Taming of the Shrew.”
“There’s no taming that one,” Rebecca replied, still shaking her head.

Severed

Severed (Cloud Prophet Trilogy, #3)Severed by Megg Jensen

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book for my honest review.

Although I liked this book I liked it the least out of the trilogy. Reychel is suffering from headaches like the first prophet and the cause is found to be from an unusual source. Afterwards, Reychel has decisions to make that not only will affect her and Mark but all of those in the kingdom.

The pace of this book is a much faster rate than those that came before it. And it feels like the level of magic is also at a much higher degree than before. It seems like anything is possible however improbable. If there is an issue with plot or timeline or a battle just use magic instead of coming up with a likely scenario. Reychel is also so worried about her visions of the future. But if she had paid any attention at all she would know that the future for her as any of us is uncertain. Her visions for her future changed with each decision that she made about her life. No two ever showed the same sequence except for her madness near the end and even those were different each time.

I was a bit disappointed in comparison with the rest of the trilogy. The story line was a bit all over the place and the ending seemed a bit unlikely. I'm glad I continued with the series and found out how things were all wrapped up even if I thought it could have been better.

Evertaster Tour

The Buttersmiths' Gold
BATTLES. BLUEBERRIES. BOVINES.
TORBJORN AND STORFJELL’S HISTORY UNFOLDS IN AN EPIC EVERTASTER NOVELLA.
Everyone knows the most coveted treasure of the Viking Age was blueberry muffins. Blueberry muffins so succulent that if you sniffed just a whiff, you'd want a whole bite. If you bit a bite, you'd want a batch; if you snatched a batch, you'd stop at nothing short of going to war just to claim them all.
Young Torbjorn Trofastsonn comes from the clan that makes them. He's a Viking through and
through – he's thirteen winters old, larger than most respectable rocks, and most of all, a Buttersmith. That's what he thinks anyway, until a charismatic merchant makes Torbjorn question his place among the muffin-makers. When Torbjorn lets the secret of his clan's muffin recipe slip, he calls doom and destruction down upon his peaceful village and forces his brother Storfjell and his clansmen to do the one thing they are ill-prepared to do: battle for their lives.
